Philanthropists who decided to donate their wealth for charity

It is rightly said, “No man can become rich without enriching others.” Scores of the world's wealthiest people have taken to this philosophy and donated their riches to hundreds of causes. While business magnates like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are famous for their charitable activities, there are many others who choose to share their blessings with the needy people. UCW has made a list of these philanthropists who decided to donate their wealth for charity.

Mukesh Ambani
India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani gave his 60th birthday celebrations a miss recently. He chose instead to donate Rs 75.5 lakh to a hospital run by the Shirdi Saibaba Sansthan Trust to mark the day. The donation was meant to purchase medical equipment and other amenities to give a succour to poor patients across Maharashtra. An additional Rs 400,000 was received for providing free meals to devotees at the Shri Sai Prasadalaya.

LN Mittal

Steel magnate Lakshmi Narayan Mittal donated $25 million in October last year to establish an endowment at Harvard University’s South Asia Institute, which spearheads Harvard’s engagement with South Asia countries including India. The institute was rechristened as “The Lakshmi Mittal South Asia Institute” following this generous donation.

Sunil Bharti Mittal

Telecom giant Airtel’s Sunil Bharti Mittal came bearing a philanthropic bounty of Rs 7,000 crore in November and a promise to set up a university to provide free skill-based education. The money is part of the Mittal family’s personal wealth. The industrialist also promised 3 per cent of their stake in Bharti Airtel towards supporting the activities of Bharti Foundation, the Group’s philanthropic arm.

Bill Gates

While the serial giver has been making headlines for his seven-figure donations since setting up the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, he outdid himself in August this year with a hefty gift of $4.6 billion by endowing 64 million Microsoft shares. The couple donated $16 billion worth of shares in 1999 as well. The billionaire is the leader of the philanthropist pack, having founded the Giving Pledge along with wife Melinda and friend Warren Buffett.

Michael Jordan
The Hornets owner donated $7 million in October to launch medical clinics. It’s the largest philanthropic donation ever by the former NBA champion. What pushed Jordan to dig into his deep pockets was a study that found that poor children in Charlotte have the worst odds than any of the top 50 cities in the United States.

Lionel Messi

Messi’s €70,000 gift to Doctors without Borders in November won many hearts even though the amount seems less compared to the multi-million donations by business honchos. The Argentinian great donated the money after winning a libel case against a newspaper. He filed a case after the newspaper published an article which claimed that Messi wore a wig and used performance-enhancing drugs in the 2014 World Cup final.
