College Girls take Self-Defence Training

Keeping in mind the ever increasing eve teasing and women assault cases, Odisha state government has adopted a creative recourse to empower college girls with self-defence training to make them equipped against the wrong-doers. More than 500 college girl students will be trained as master trainers under the 'Master trainer's programme on self-defence' initiated under Odisha Youth Policy-2013. Later they will train the girl students in schools and colleges in district and block-levels across the state.

D B Swami, director of sports and youth affairs department intimated about their target of training about 3 lakh students across the state under this programme.

The training will include self-defence tricks for the girls to fight different forms of crimes against women like mobbing, blackmailing, sexual assault, domestic violence and eve teasing. They will also be intimated about various kinds of new-age crimes like porn CD and cyber crimes in this programme. The girls will learn the strengths and weaknesses of criminals and their mode of operation too. As most of the crimes are conducted by known persons, the girls will be trained to fight back from the initial stage.

During the seven-day programme of the training, each student will get 49 hours of training. They’ll also be provided a booklet, which will guide them to impart the same training to other girls So that in future they can also able to train more girl like them.

Well known Marshal-art teacher Hari Patnaik of Utkal Karate School has partnered with the government for this training programme who will also teach girls about the self defence.

The participants hope that the training will give a boost to their confidence level and they can resist the wrong doers after the training.

Such initiative is necessary to give lesson to those eve teasers whose numbers are increasing day by day in the city said, a collge going girl in the city.
